The Month of Ibrahim (AS)
This is the month of Hajj and Eid al-Adha, the month of commemorating the sacrifice offered by Ibrahim (AS). We link our faith back to Ibrahim, who represents the fountainhead of all the revealed, monotheistic religions of modern times — a good time to educate non-Muslim friends and colleagues. Ibrahim (AS) was ordered to proclaim Hajj, and the sacrifice was prescribed; the practice continues to this day.
Proclaim the Pilgrimage
Muslims have accepted this call. Those who can afford it leave homes and businesses and travel long distances to fulfill this obligation. Some of our friends and relatives stand on the Field of Arafah, and we fast and sacrifice animals to be with them in spirit. Plan for Hajj if not yet done — come back as if reborn, having seen the diverse Muslim community.
وَأَذِّن فِي النَّاسِ بِالْحَجِّ یَأْتُوكَ رِ جَالاً وَعَلَى كُلِّ ضَامِرٍ یَأْتِینَ مِن كُلِّ فَجٍّ عَمِیقٍ لِیَشْهَدُوا مَنَافِعَ لَهُمْ وَیَذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللهَّ ِ فِي أَیَّامٍ مَّعْلُومَاتٍ عَلَى مَا رَزَقَهُم مِّن بَهِیمَةِ الأَنْعَامِ فَكُلُوا مِنْهَا وَأَطْعِمُوا الْبَائِسَ الْفَقِیرَ ثُمَّ لْیَقْضُوا تَفَثَهُمْ وَلْیُوفُوا نُذُورَ هُمْ وَلْیَطَّوَّفُوا بِالْبَیْتِ الْعَتِیقِ“And proclaim the pilgrimage to humanity — they will come on foot and on every transport, from every distant point, that they may witness the benefits for themselves and celebrate the name of Allah during the appointed days for providing them with the animal livestock. So eat from it, and feed the unfortunate poor. Then let them perform their acts of cleansing, fulfill their vows, and circle around the Ancient House.”

Redemption and Mercy
Hajj is the most important journey in a Muslim's life, the fifth and final pillar of Islam, and it summarises the dramatic story of our Deen. Hajj reminds us of our basic human nature, our fitra — we were born innocent and pure, without sin, but Allah also made us forgetful and easily distracted, which leads us into sinful behaviour. But Hajj also offers redemption, divine mercy, and forgiveness; Allah reminds us never to despair of His mercy.
قُلْ یَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِینَ أَسْرَ فُوا عَلَى أَنفُسِهِمْ لاَ تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللهَّ ِ إِنَّ اللهَّ َ یَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِیعًا إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِیمُ“Say: O you servants of Mine who have transgressed against your own selves! Despair not of Allah's mercy: behold, Allah forgives all sins — for, verily, He alone is much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace!”

A Journey Through Sacred History
Hajj takes us on a journey back through time, retelling the moral and spiritual history of humankind. We visit the Ka'aba, the first place of worship, built before the first church, temple, or synagogue — the Baytul-Laah, the home of Monotheism, the cradle of Tawheed. Here we walk around the geographical centre of Islam.
Our tawaaf symbolises effort and action in a constant, circular motion, centred round the fixed and immovable idea of Unity — just like the Ka'aba itself represents Tawheed: unity of belief, unity of purpose, standing firm amid a swirl of individual opinions and starting points. Then we perform Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, which symbolises a mother's hunt for water for her crying child in a place where there was no water.
The Benefits of Hajj
- Renewal of the remembrance of Allah through the Talbiyah
- Remembrance of the Day of Judgement
- Sins are wiped out — the Prophet (PBUH) said whoever performs Hajj without uttering immodest speech or abusing others returns as a newborn (Muslim)
- Sacrifice of time and money for the sake of Allah
- Training in patience, perseverance, humility, organization, management, tolerance, social skills, kindness, sympathy, love, affection, sense of belonging, and concern for others
Connecting Us to History and Humanity
إِنَّ أَوَّلَ بَیْتٍ وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِي بِبَكَّةَ مُبَارَكًا وَهُدًى لِّلْعَالَمِینَ فِیهِ آیَاتٌ بَیِّـنَاتٌ مَّقَامُ إِبْرَاهِیمَ وَمَن دَخَلَهُ كَانَ آمِنًا وَللهَِّ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَیْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَیْهِ سَبِیلاً“The first house established for mankind is the one at Bekka, blessed and a guidance for all people. In it are evident signs — the Station of Abraham. Whoever enters it attains security. Pilgrimage to the House is a duty to Allah for all who can make the journey.”
Al-Imran 3:96-97
- Al-Hujurat 49:13 — O people, We created you from a male and a female and made you races and tribes that you may know one another; the best among you is the most righteous.
The Talbiyah
On Hajj, pilgrims are Allah's guests (Dhuyuf ur-Rahman) invited to His BaituLlah — not everyone makes it. As soon as pilgrims put on ihram, they repeat: "Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk la shareeka laka labbayk, innal hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, la shareeka lak" — "I am at Your service, O Allah, I am at Your service. You have no partner. Indeed, the praise and the blessings belong to You, and the Kingdom. You have no partner."
Allah has honoured them with His invitation, and they announce their presence and willingness to serve. Loyalties are only to Allah; He has no partners. All other slogans and systems become subservient when it comes to Allah SWT.
The Sacrifice of Ibrahim (AS)
We fast on the Day of Arafah and offer sacrifice to commemorate the sacrifice of Ibrahim (AS), who was asked to sacrifice his son Isma'il (AS) — teaching us to sacrifice continuously. It is not easy to sacrifice our time, wealth, property, or knowledge, but Ibrahim (AS) was asked to sacrifice one of the dearest things to him, his own son, and put the love of Allah SWT over everything else.
فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ السَّعْيَ قَالَ یَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّي أَرَى فِي الْمَنَامِ أَنِّي أَذْبَحُكَ فَانظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَى قَالَ یَا أَبَتِ افْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ سَتَجِدُنِي إِن شَاء اللَّهُ مِنَ الصَّابِرِینَ فَلَمَّا أَسْلَمَا وَتَلَّهُ لِلْجَبِینِ وَنَادَیْنَاهُ أَن یَا إِبْرَاهِیمُ قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ الرُّؤْیَا إِنَّا كَذَلِكَ نَجْزِي الْمُحْسِنِینَ إِنَّ هَذَا لَهُوَ الْبَلَاء الْمُبِینُ وَفَدَیْنَاهُ بِذِبْحٍ عَظِیمٍ“Then, when he was old enough to accompany him, he said, 'O my son, I see in a dream that I am sacrificing you; see what you think.' He said, 'O my father, do as you are commanded; you will find me, if Allah wills, one of the steadfast.' Then, when they had submitted, and he put his forehead down, We called out to him, 'O Abraham! You have fulfilled the vision.' Thus We reward the doers of good. This was certainly an evident test. And We redeemed him with a great sacrifice.”

Arafah: A Dress Rehearsal for Judgement
The great gathering on Arafat is our Day of Atonement and a dress rehearsal for the Day of Judgement. In simple ihram clothes we cannot distinguish anyone's wealth or social status — the president, the billionaire, the taxi driver, the school teacher, and the farmer all look exactly the same. This is the beauty of Islam: Allah isn't looking at our social status or expensive clothes, only at what's inside our hearts — anger, jealousy, hatred, and lust, or love, mercy, and generosity? Do we have a qalb saleem, a pure, sound heart?
یَوْمَ لاَ یَنفَعُ مَالٌ وَلاَ بَنُونَ إِلاَّ مَنْ أَتَى اللهَّ َ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِیمٍ“The Day on which neither wealth will be of any use, nor children, [and when] only he will be happy who comes before God with a heart free of evil.”

Jabal Rahma and the Example of Adam (AS)
At Jabal Rahma, the Mount of Mercy, pilgrims recall the theme of atonement and forgiveness after acknowledging sin. Here we stand not simply as Muslims or believers, but as Bani Adam, descendants of Adam and Eve, at the very place the first human beings sought forgiveness and Allah forgave them.
Nabi Adam's epic spiritual journey began with innocence, went through human forgetfulness, distraction, and disobedience — the first sin — but Allah also gave him the ability to recognize his mistake, regret it, and plead for forgiveness, finally earning redemption. This is the same journey every human being must take. If you have not yet undertaken this blessed journey, make your intention (niyyat) to perform Hajj as soon as possible, in sha' Allah.
قَالاَ رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِ ینَ“They said, 'Our Lord, we have done wrong to ourselves. Unless You forgive us and have mercy on us, we will be among the losers.'”

Ibrahim's Search for the Truth
فَلَمَّا جَنَّ عَلَیْهِ اللَّیْلُ رَ أَى كَوْكَبًا قَالَ هَـذَا رَبِّي فَلَمَّا أَفَلَ قَالَ لا أُحِبُّ الآفِلِینَ فَلَمَّا رَ أَى الْقَمَرَ بَازِ غًا قَالَ هَـذَا رَبِّي فَلَمَّا أَفَلَ قَالَ لَئِن لَّمْ یَهْدِنِي رَبِّي لأكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ الضَّالِّینَ فَلَمَّا رَ أَى الشَّمْسَ بَازِ غَةً قَالَ هَـذَا رَبِّي هَـذَآ أَكْبَرُ فَلَمَّا أَفَلَتْ قَالَ یَا قَوْمِ إِنِّي بَرِ يءٌ مِّمَّا تُشْرِ كُونَ“When the night fell over him, he saw a planet. He said, 'This is my lord.' But when it set, he said, 'I do not love those that set.' Then, when he saw the moon rising, he said, 'This is my lord.' But when it set, he said, 'If my Lord does not guide me, I will be one of the erring people.' Then, when he saw the sun rising, he said, 'This is my lord, this is bigger.' But when it set, he said, 'O my people, I am innocent of your idolatry.'”

Raising the Foundations of the Ka'aba
وَإِذْ یَرْفَعُ إِبْرَاهِیمُ الْقَوَاعِدَ مِنَ الْبَیْتِ وَإِسْمَاعِیلُ رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِیعُ الْعَلِیمُ“As Abraham raises the foundations of the House, together with Ishmael: 'Our Lord, accept it from us, You are the Hearer, the Knower.'”

The Argument with the Tyrant King
أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى الَّذِي حَآجَّ إِبْرَ اهِیمَ فِي رَبِّهِ أَنْ آتَاهُ اللهَّ ُ الْمُلْكَ إِذْ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِیمُ رَبِّيَ الَّذِي یُحْیِـي وَیُمِیتُ قَالَ أَنَا أُحْیِـي وَأُمِیتُ قَالَ إِبْرَاهِیمُ فَإِنَّ اللهَّ َ یَأْتِي بِالشَّمْسِ مِنَ الْمَشْرِ قِ فَأْتِ بِهَا مِنَ الْمَغْرِ بِ فَبُهِتَ الَّذِي كَفَرَ“Have you not considered him who argued with Abraham about his Lord, because Allah had given him sovereignty? Abraham said, 'My Lord is He who gives life and causes death.' He said, 'I give life and cause death.' Abraham said, 'Allah brings the sun from the East, so bring it from the West,' so the blasphemer was confounded.”

The Mission of the Muslim Ummah
Allah gave us this name so that we become witnesses to humankind, by words and deeds — witnesses to Allah, not to any nationality, culture, race, or worldly gain, but only to Allah for the good of everyone.
We are reminded to pray regularly and give charity regularly — not occasionally or however we feel, but the way Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet prescribe. Finally, we are told to 'hold to Allah,' who is our Protector, the excellent Protector and Helper. Holding to the rope of Allah is holding to His guidance and commands — a matter of method and learning. Holding to Allah Himself is trusting His help, power, closeness, and love — personal and experiential, spiritual living rather than mere intellectual learning. As believers we should do both.
وَجَاهِدُوا فِي اللهَّ ِ حَقَّ جِهَادِهِ هُوَ اجْتَبَاكُمْ وَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَیْكُمْ فِي الدِّینِ مِنْ حَرَ جٍ مِّلَّةَ أَبِیكُمْ إِبْرَ اهِیمَ هُوَ سَمَّاكُمُ الْمُسْلِمینَ“And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you, and has not burdened you in religion — the faith of your father Abraham. It is he who named you Muslims before, and in this, so that the Messenger may be a witness over you, and you may be witnesses over the people.”
